AOIT Advisory Board Meeting, September 8, 2005

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Spears at the LEDA offices on September 8, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. with 10 persons present: Kit Becnel , Joel Hilbun , Casey Bienvenu , Mike Spears, David Barry, Magdy Bayoumi, Andre Comeaux, Katie Domingue, Dinah Domingue, and Burnell Lejeune.

Adoption of the minutes of the previous meeting was postponed until the next meeting.

  1. GampCamp! 2005 Update
    • Kit showed a short video made to illustrate GameCamp! and the video work done by volunteer student videographers at the camp.
    • There was a discussion of GameCamp! Comments included:
      • The AOIT had 5 students, the largest contingent from any school, attend.
      • GameCamp! will be a beginning step to create a culture in Lafayette where the video game industry can thrive.
      • The camp was a great connection with ULL, video game professionals, students, and the AOIT.
      • Thanks to Magdy Bayoumi for his work behind the scenes to bring GameCamp! to ULL.
  2. School’s of Choice Expo – Saturday, November 12, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Theme: “The Wizard of Oz”
    • Kit described the Expo; each school was asked to adopt a movie for a theme at the recruitment expo, and AOIT has tentatively identified the Wizard of Oz.
    • A discussion was held on how to use this theme as a metaphor for career choice and preparation and how to develop the theme to set up the AOIT exhibits and booths.
  3. Internships for Summer 2006 minimum of 14 positions
    • Kit described the process the AOIT will go through to get students ready for internships and what internship sponsors need to do.
    • We would also like this year’s juniors to participate in a job shadowing on February 2.
    • Advisory Board members need a short extract from the NAF internship guidelines to assist prospective sponsors and recruitment.
    • We should send a letter to prospective sponsors about internships and have a press release before that.
  4. NAF visitation, October 6, 2005 cancelled to be scheduled
    • NAF postponed its October visitation to the spring because of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
    • We will likely have a joint social with the Advisory Board from Acadiana High School ’s Academy of Finance to meet each other, in conjunction with the NAF visitation.

  6. Announcements
    • Casey Bienvenu , the first AOIT graduate (and alumni member of the Advisory Board) received a National Academy Foundation scholarship from VIASINC Corporation. There was national competition for the scholarship.
    • The LPSB adopted the budget last night with no cuts to the academy budgets. The Advisory Board should thank the School Board for supporting the academies.
