November 3 Black Pot Festival, by Courtni Robicheaux and Alyse Mouton

On November 2-3, the South Louisiana Black Pot Festival and Cook-off was held at Acadian Village in Lafayette, Louisiana. This unique festival focuses on the traditional Cajun music from south Louisiana. Music from different cultures is also featured. The festival also emphasizes food prepared and cooked all together in a black pot with all the ingredients of good Cajun home hospitality. This is one of Louisiana’s newest festivals, bring its second.

Robert Fairly, Andre Favors, John Rutledge, David Lucito, Mike Gervais are students from UL who participated in a class called the Food and Folklore Initiative at the University of Lafayette. In this class their main goal was to promote the culture and traditions of Louisiana by documenting the details of festivals. Robert and Andre were able to document the cook-off, the traditional Cajun music, and the accordion contest that took place at the festival. They documented the young and old, good and great, contestants in the accordion contest. They also captured people from all over the United States camping out in tents to enjoy the festival. John, David, and Mike, got one on one with people enjoying the festival to find out why they chose the Black Pot Festival and what had brought them there. The students learned how to make a roux and a few secrets behind Acadian food culture. They focused on getting the information that would answer their question as to why the Black Pot festival is so unique, and how much it really has brought the traditions and talents of our culture together.
