October 17 Class Preparation, by Nicole Cormier, Maggie Stokes, and Victoria Wessels

On October 17, 2007, AOIT seniors, Nicole Cormier, Maggie Stokes, and Victoria Wessels, and AOIT Co-Director of the Academy, Joel Hilbun, attended the Acadiana Food and Folklore Media Initiative class at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. We observed the planning and scheduling of the events they would be filming on the day of the Rice Festival.

Abigail Richard, a project researcher, organized AOIT students for the upcoming Rice Festival. Maggie chose to do still photography, while Nicole chose to do video. The AOIT students were then separated into two different groups with the UL students.

Towards the end of the class period, the AOIT students interviewed Andre Favors and John Rutledge about what they plan to do or their expectations for this project. They also expressed their hope that the project would aid in the preservation of the south Louisiana culture, help to dispel inaccurate stereotypes of Cajuns and Louisianians, and work toward improving the tourist industry of the area. Dr. Lana Henry, the Project Folklorist, described her role in the project as a quality control manager.
