October 20 Rice Festival, by Nicole Cormier, and Maggie Stokes

On Saturday, October 20, 2007, Dr. Charles Richard, Mrs. Abigail Richard, Andre Favors, John Rutledge, Robert Fairley, and David Lucito of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Mr. Joel Hilbun, Nicole Comier, Maggie Stokes, and Gentry Pickett of Carencro High School met at the old Sam’s to caravan to Crowley for the 2007 International Rice Festival. Once we had all arrived at the rendezvous point, Dr. Richard handed out equipment and back-up batteries to all the University of Louisiana of Lafayette students. Then Andre mapped out the route we would all take in order to get to Crowley and explained the plans for interviews and video coverage (Video). Upon our arrival in Crowley, the CHS students got their equipment from Mr. Hilbun, and we split into our groups and began our long walk from the parking lot to the Festival grounds. (Photos) (Video)

At the Festival, Andre and John interviewed a rice mill worker, while Mr. Hilbun, and Gentry documented their work (Video). Dr. Richard, Andre, John, Mr. Hilbun, and Gentry also recorded footage and still photographs, at the main stage, during the “Presentation of Visiting Queens” and “International Rice Festival Queen’s Pageant.” (Photos) (Video)

After the Queen’s Pageant, Dr. Richard, Mr. Hilbun, Andre, and John climbed to the top of the Acadia Parish Court House to get a bird's eye view of the festival. (Photos) (Video)

At the same time, David, Robert, Nicole, and Maggie recorded footage and still photographs during the “International Rice Festival Fiddle & Accordion Contest”. (Photos)

The CHS Students left a little after noon, but the UL students remained at the festival to capture footage of the rice threshing demonstration. The video from the Festival will be edited with interviews of some of the festival staff and volunteers taken before, during, and after the Festival itself.
