CARENCRO — With a cheer, a spirited dance and a ribbon-cutting, parents, school officials and business leaders marked the grand opening Wednesday of the Lafayette Parish School District’s new technology academy, which currently serves 73 students.

Located at Carencro High School, it features three new computer labs, laptop computers and enough software to launch a battleship.

“I wanted to learn more about technology,” said academy freshman Jamie Cobb, 15. “I thought this program would help. It is going good so far.”

The Carencro High School Academy of Information Technology began this year offering students across the parish the opportunity to study and learn Web page design, graphics and animation, digital photography, computer networking and maintenance and global technology applications.

Carencro High School senior Casey Bienvenu is a member of the CHS Academy of Information Technology’s advisory board.

“I just like getting on the computer and learning what I can do,” Bienvenu said. “This academy does have a lot to offer.”

Mike Spears, a local businessman, heads the academy’s advisory board. “I am very proud to be affiliated with this academy,” said Spears, who hired Bienvenu to work for him two years ago. He told the students they will be vital to the community’s future because of their high-tech skills.

“Lafayette is exploding in terms of technology right now,” Spears said. “There is a tremendous opportunity for young people. ... Lafayette is already looked at as the technology center for our state ... and Carencro High School is at the center of the information technology universe.”
