Carencro High School will receive a $1,000 gift as a result of one
their teachers being nominated for the National Education Association
award.Teacher
Joel Hilbun of Carencro High School has been nominated by the Louisiana
Association of Educators for the Horace Mann-NEA Foundation Award for
Teaching Excellence.
Hilbun, a winner of the 2005 Carencro Teacher of the Year award, serves
as the co-director of the CHS Academy of Information Technology and
also aided in the development of Carencro High's Web site.
"He has encouraged students to learn through exploratory and
investigative methods," said Carencro High Principal Annette Rath.
"Joel loves molding young students' minds through discovery, research
and application."The NEA Foundation accepts nominations of one
teacher from every state. Five nominees will be selected from the state
nominees as finalists and will receive the Horace Mann Award and a
personal gift of $10,000 from the NEA. Of those five nominees, only one
will be selected to receive the NEA Member Benefits-NEA Foundation
Award for Teaching Excellence and an additional $25,000 personal gift.
Hilbun will find out if he is selected Feb. 8 in Washington, D.C.
The
foundation was created by the NEA, a national teacher's union, in 1969
to recognize teachers from across the nation for their instructional
expertise, creativity and innovation in the classroom.
The
foundation is sustained by an annual $1 contribution from each of the
NEA's 3.2 million members, in addition to contributions from corporate
donors.
